Supporting Supervision for all Dietitians

About DSRAI

DSRAI: building a sustainable, strengthened, progressive Dietetics profession through supervision.

Dietitian Supervision Resources Australia & International is committed to advancing the practice and culture of supervision in Australian and global dietetics for the benefit of the profession, the community and the clients we serve.

We provide accessible, evidence based, practical resources and embody the spirit of supervision through our commitment to collaboration, the sharing of knowledge, and inclusive support.

In 2015 a small group of dedicated APDs identified a need in the profession; Dietitians were looking for more support for their practice, development and wellbeing. It was clear that the profession could benefit from advancing a culture of supervision for members and this became the working goal of a group of ‘Supervision Advocate’ volunteers.  The first task of the group was to develop a series of professional resources for members of Dietitians Australia (DA) to support the practical implementation of supervision. These resources were published for DA members in 2016 and featured in the members’ resource library.

In 2017 broader advocacy took place, resulting in a series of recommendations to the Board of Dietitians Australia (DA) to advance professional supervision for Dietitians in Australia. As part of a staged implementation plan, the recommendation to build an online supervision resource hub for members was accepted by the Board of DA. This endorsement led to content development for the hub, supported by a membership scoping survey (completed in 2018 by 241 DA members). The message was clear: Dietitians want supervision and they need help to deliver and participate in it.

Following many years of volunteer collaboration, the advancements accepted by the Board of DA in 2017 were unable to be actualised due to resource constraints within DA. In 2021 a commitment was made by Tara Crow in consultation with the Supervision Advocacy Team, to build the proposed supervision resource hub privately, as a service to the profession, and DSRA was launched.

In 2024 DSRA was renamed to DSRAI Dietitian Supervision Resources Australia & International.  This was in response to a growing number of enquiries from international Dietitians about delivering and accessing supervision services. Australia has a reputation for being a head of the game on this developing area of contemporary Dietetic practice.

In June 2025 a landmark paper was published featuring Laura Kiely and Tara Crow as first authors:

Crow T, Kiely L, Harris D, Palermo C. Professional supervision in dietetics: A comprehensive, narrative literature review. Nutrition & Dietetics. 2025; 1-10. doi:10.1111/1747-0080.70023

This publication represents a critical step forward in promoting a supervision culture across the profession and offers a foundation for policy, education, and implementation efforts. The paper provides an evidence-informed definition of supervision and a conceptual model tailored to the needs and realities of contemporary dietetic practice and is an essential read for all Dietitians interested in progressive professional practice.

In October 2025 Dietitians Australia formally endorsed the practice of supervision as an essential form of professional development for Dietitians. This endorsement was accompanied by the removal of the mandated mentoring component of the APD program. In response to the support needed as a result of these significant changes, DSRAI developed the New Grad and Early Career Hub .

DSRAI remains in open communication with Dietitians Australia and looks forward to supporting the implementation of anticipated developments in supervision for DA Members.

Welcome to DSRAI! We are delighted to have you visit this website and hope you will become a DSRAI member to support this initiative. Allow us to introduce ourselves:

DSRAI is owned and operated by project lead Tara Crow PACFA Reg Clinical & APD. Tara is the driving force of DSRAI. She is supported by a team of incredibly skillful volunteer consultants all committed to a singular vision of advancing Dietetics through a culture of supervision.

DSRAI Consultants:

Beyond the Consultancy Team sits a community of supporters, all singing in chorus about supervision and its value. DSRAI is extremely grateful to this community.

Since its inception in 2021, DSRAI has been privately funded by Tara Crow as a service to the profession and has not received commercial sponsorship. DSRAI is a registered sole trader business owned by Tara Crow. All funds generated by the website (through modest supervisor listing fees) are used to contribute to the costs of running the website and associated services. Tara does not currently derive an income from the website and donates her time voluntarily to the website and community building activities. This model of operations is in transition as we head into 2026. These changes will enable DSRAI to sustainably resource the rapidly growing demand for supervision activities in Dietetics whilst maintaining its exemplary standard, into the future.

We consider DSRAI a community resource so if you have a contribution or suggestion for DSRAI we warmly welcome you to get in touch. We are keen to hear from members of the profession to provide inclusive support that adapts responsively to the needs of dietetic practitioners in Australia and around the globe.
